FIBER ART
Bringing my years of professional clothing design to my art
Inspired by a Yuan dynasty ceramic Buddah head, THE ARTIST’S HAND, is a 72” double faced banner meant to express that it is through artists that civilization is maintained, despite forces that would corrupt and destroy it as well as the natural evolution of time. I chose to have elements spilling down as the banner tatters suggesting that these “ideas” are left as inheritance for the next generations.

Another field biting the dust! A fence goes up. A small notification is posted on it. It says something in legalize that translates to “you are invited to a hearing but it has already been decided; this land is doomed”. A mangle of crushed trees, moss and broken branches appear where lush green vegetation stood. Then sandy dirt and in no time, a jungle of pipes, artificial ponds surrounded by a staggering amount of new homes, and lots of orderly landscaping. Never mind. Things grow quickly here in Florida. Things go quickly too. Day after day I have watched the wild fields with their succession of colored flowers bulldozed under, succumbing to the builders’ onward march. Come share paradise…..quick before it is gone!

The children leave
the darkening park for home,
and the sun, exhausted
from following them since dawn,
entrusts them to the moon
and shuts both eyes.
In peace, the children sleep
through the cricket’s song.
In peace, beneath the blooming
of each star, bicycles rest their bones
in the tasseled grass,
and one dream spends the night
in a pine’s tangled branches.
